I am a survivor of the COVID-19 Virus. From my memory, I caught the virus while I was traveling north Fort Lauder-dale, Florida, to New York City in Mid-March 2020.
In New York State, COVID-19 outbreaks started in Westchester county in late March and spread quickly throughout the city and state.
The knowledge and wisdom of our Governor Cuomo embracing the knowledge of the scientific community was critical in saving the lives of thousands of people in this state.
One of my veteran brothers calls COVID-19 the “Invisible Assassin”. The COVID-19 virus transmits through the air. This virus does not have any preference of sex, gender, or race. It also targets any person with any preexisting physical ailments with like asthma, any respiratory challenge, diabetes, and any illness that affects the brain.
I discovered that I was infected about one week after my return from my trip from Florida.
I would share with you that COVID-19 affects different people differently. I did not have a high fever or a cough. My legs gave out on me as I came out of the shower.
I now realize that I had a knee replacement and that was a preexisting condition although I did not consider it.
After consulting with my VA doctor, I quarantined myself and my lady for 14 days in our apartment.
In addition to the isolation period, my doctor advised me to start taking the vitamin supplements Vitamin C; Vitamin D3; Zinc; and Magnesium. He said that the feedback that he received was that these supplements would assist in the recovery process.
After 14 days, I was instructed to go the VA medical center for a COVID-19 test and a full examination which included giving some blood.
Two days later, my doctor contacted me stating that I was exposed, I did have the COVID-19 virus, and that my body had built up antibodies against the virus.
I asked the doctor what the level of my antibodies were, and he was replied it was at 45%.
He stated he wanted to check me again in 2 weeks. I went to the hospital again and went through the same process of being tested to ensures that I was COVID-19 negative and was sent to the COVID-19 center for another blood drawing and having my doctor check my vitals.
The doctor called me two days later informing me that I was still COVID-19 negative and that my antibody level had increased to 65%.
My doctor asked to see me again in another week.
I went to the hospital for the third time and went through the same process of being tested to ensure that I was COVID negative and was sent to the COVID-19 center for another blood drawing and having my doctor check my vitals.
The doctor called me two days later informing me that I was still COVID-19 negative and that me antibody level had increased to 75%. The doctor then confirmed that my blood type was B negative. He then shared that in cases the VA discovered that veterans with negative types blood recover faster to COVID-19. Apparently, COVID-19 did not like my blood type.
The doctor then sent me upstairs for a Cat scan on all my organs. I asked him why I was going through this procedure. The doctor replied that COVID-19 also has secondary effects on the heart, lungs, bladder, and pancreas. He wanted to ensure that all my organs were functioning properly.
I went through the Cat scan and he called me the next day and said everything was clear.
My next question for the doctor, was there any chance that I could catch the virus again because I had antibodies built up in my body? He replied, there was no evidence to his knowledge of how long the antibodies would last in my body or if I could catch COVID-19 again.
With obtaining this knowledge, I have concerns when I leave my home to enter the world.
I am always masked and gloved.
I have a great concern when I travel in the streets and observe any person who does not adhere to the safety protocol to keep themselves and me alive. I have great concerns regarding using any transportation system supported by the MTA because there can be no way social distancing can be enforced.
In addition, I have observed an increased level of hostility in people with the confinement of this pandemic period.
There are people who have no regard for their safety and risk their safety and ours because they feel that COVID-19 is a hoax.
It really is not!
